Recent demographic trends indicate that single native americans are finding it more difficult to meet other aboriginal singles. In Canada the First Nation laws on the books disallow couples from bestowing status rights on their kids if only one of the parents is a member. So, if the law considers your union to be ” status, the children fail to benefit.
Alderville First Nation was recently studied by a group of researchers. The results were surprising and a little disheartening. 80% of Alderville members were found to have formed unions with non-members. Researchers came to the conclusion that 2032 would be the year when the last Status Indian children would be born in Alderville unless something changed.
Although the study was limited to Alderville, odds are that other small bands have members who are similarly inclined. The wide separation of First Nations peoples, and the fact that numbers are small to begin with, makes it hard to see how the less-populated bands will continue unless aboriginal singles find methods for easily meeting other single native american women and men.
The outlook is not bleak. There are millions of native american singles scattered across the North American continent. Consequently, there is plenty of opportunity for members to date other Native American singles. While this was previously a difficult proposition, the rise of the internet and specialized online communities makes it much simpler.
Online, people base their personal interactions on the philosophy that borders are not barriers to meeting and connecting with others. In the same sense first nations singles generally have the same philosophy. What was difficult in the past ” dating other first nations singles who may be separated by vast distances ” is now simple and effective thanks to the advent of online aboriginal dating communities.
Thanks to the versatility inherent in the online community, aboriginal singles are not limited to Pow Wows when it comes to meeting other aboriginal singles. Personal profiles, photographs, chat rooms, and IMs all combine to provide opportunities to meet and get to know people, no matter the location.
Online First Nations dating sites are proving to be effective in bringing like-minded people together, no matter their location, near or far. These days, folks are not limited to the friends, lovers, and potential spouses they can meet locally; rather, they can and often do find love all over Canada or the United States. It can be hard to meet a true soul mate, but the online social network makes it a whole lot easier.
